Huntley Ezekiel Hibbert, affectionately known as “Uncle Zeek,” was born on May 11, 1902, at 122 Upper Oxford Street in Hannah Town, Kingston, Jamaica. He was the son of Solomon Augustus Hibbert and Theodora Elizabeth Marquis.
Life & Work
Uncle Zeek was trained as a shoemaker in his early years, a skilled trade that reflected the craftsmanship common among men of his era. He later operated a funeral parlor located at the corner of Slipe Road and Orange Street, near Torrington Bridge in Kingston, placing him at the center of an essential community service.
Community & Character
Through both his trade and his business, Uncle Zeek played a meaningful role in the lives of many within his community. In the later years of his life, he lost his sight, yet remained a respected figure among family and those who knew him.
Passing & Legacy
He passed away in October 1980. His legacy lives on through what is recognized as the largest lineage within the Hibbert family, reflecting the breadth of his descendants and the lasting impact of his life.
