Joslyn Ivanhoe Hibbert, affectionately known as “Uncle Jos,” was born on April 30, 1910, at 2 Upper Oxford Street in Kingston, Jamaica. He was the son of Solomon Augustus Hibbert and Theodora Elizabeth Marquis.
Life & Work
As a young man, Uncle Jos trained as a motor vehicle mechanic, developing a strong technical skillset that supported his lifelong work. He later spent many years driving for the Jamaica Omnibus Service, contributing to the island’s public transportation system during a critical period of growth and development.

Uncle Jos often took pride in sharing that he was born in the year of the “comet star”—1910, when Halley's Comet passed through Earth’s orbit. This detail became a memorable part of how he told his story and connected his life to a notable moment in history.

He passed away in 1994 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica, due to complications from a stroke.
