Robert Herman Hibbert, affectionately known as “Uncle Herman,” was born on March 15, 1900, at 122 Upper Oxford Street in Hannah Town, Kingston, Jamaica. He was the son of Solomon Augustus Hibbert and Theodora Elizabeth Marquis.
Life & Work
Uncle Herman was a man of initiative and leadership. He founded a branch of the Mechanics Lodge known as “Loyal Hibbert,” which was based on Duke Street in Kingston. His involvement reflected the strong tradition of fraternal societies and skilled trades that shaped community life during that era.
Community & Character
Through his work with the Mechanics Lodge, Uncle Herman contributed to building structure, fellowship, and opportunity within his community. His efforts established a legacy tied not only to family, but to organized community development.
Passing & Legacy
Uncle Herman’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 39 after he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle at the corner of North Street and South Camp Road in Kingston.
His legacy continues through his descendants, including family in New York and England. His daughter-in-law, Mavis, resides in New York with her daughter, Barbara Hibbert.
